Description

  • Solitary or clustering rattan climbing to 25 m; stem without sheaths to 15 mm diam., with sheaths to 25 mm diam., internodes 15-25 cm long. Sheaths dark green armed with triangular spines with swollen decurrent bases and very low ridges, indumentum abundant between the spines, sheath drying dull blackish-brown beneath the indumentum; knee conspicuous; ocrea membranous, soon tattering. Flagellum to 2.5 m. Leaf ecirrate, conspicuously curved, to 80 cm; petiole to 15 cm in juveniles, very short or absent at maturity; leaflets to c. 20 on each side of the rachis, regularly arranged, lanceolate, rather distant, the basalmost held across the stem, the longest to 35 × 4 cm; apical pair joined for c. 1/4 their length, leaflets drying dull green, transverse veinlets obscure. Inflorescences c. 2 m long with up to 5 partial inflorescences; partial inflorescences rather diffuse; bracts subtending rachillae minutely roughened; male rachillae 20-50 × 1.5 mm bearing strictly distichous flowers; female rachillae 30-80 × 3 mm bearing strictly distichous flowers. Young fruit rounded, covered in 16 vertical rows of dull brown scales. Seedling leaf not known. (Dransfield, J. 1997: The Rattans of Brunei Darussalam)A
